The world’s largest urban downhill race is turning 20!
Valparaíso, Chile – Fifteen thousand people gathered in the streets of Valparaíso this Sunday to witness the twentieth edition of Red Bull Valparaíso Cerro Abajo, the most extreme urban downhill competition in the region, which this year crowned Brazilian rider Lucas Borba as champion, with a perfect descent completed in just 2:18:674 minutes.
“A lot of adrenaline, a lot of speed. It was an incredible race, very fast and unexpected. The “King of the Port” is now Brazilian and it’s me, so I’m very happy,” said Borba after finishing the race, this being his fourth year running and the first time Brazil takes home the title.
While for this edition many expected to see a definition for the first place between the Chilean Pedro Ferreira – two-time champion of the race – and the Czech Tomas Slavík -three-time champion of Red Bull Valparaíso Cerro Abajo -little by little this scenario started to fade. First when the national card did not achieve a time that placed him in the “hot seat”, and later when the Czech rider was out of the race after breaking his bike chain just a few seconds after his start.
With the massive cheers of the crowd, the title was only less than a second away from staying in Chile, as during most of the competition, an excited Felipe Agurto was leading. The Curacaví native had achieved an incredible time (2:18:855), which placed him at the top of the podium, where he remained during the face of unexpected crashes and accidents that left great riders out of the race, such as Johannes Fischbach (GER), Camilo Sánchez and Sebastián Holguín (COL) and, of course, Slavík. Nevertheless, Agurto was the best Chilean in the competition, and promised to return next year to win it.
