Ibiza Castle: Sweden wins obstacle race against teams from 50 nations

Sweden’s Daniel Ekström and Linnea Stenson beat out nearly 200 global teams in the quest to conquer nine never-before-seen obstacles in the wildest race to the top of Ibiza Castle.

Ibiza (Spain) – There was something new under the Ibiza sun this week, as nearly 200 teams from 50 countries ran, jumped, climbed and slid their way through the premiere of a wildly entertaining obstacle race, Red Bull Ibiza Royale. In the exciting culmination of a Grand Final to the top of Ibiza Castle, Daniel Ekström and Linnea Stenson of Sweden were crowned the winners of the island’s first mixed-pair obstacle race, where each obstacle was designed by an imaginative creator or Red Bull athlete.

Red Bull Ibiza Royale is all about fitness and fun as teams from across the globe take on wild obstacles in the race through the historic castle. Anyone could apply for a chance to take part, and more than 40,000 applications were submitted globally. Of these, the nearly 200 teams who stamped their ticket to the three-day World Final launched into an Ibiza adventure that included exclusive fitness sessions as well as seeding time trials and elimination heats leading up to the Grand Final.

The Grand Final took place in front of a live crowd as the top 20 teams faced nine obstacles across a 1.4 km course that wound upward through the castle with 90 meters of ascent. Featuring unique challenges and imaginative themes like ‘Spaghetti Boulevard’ and ‘Stay In One Piece’, the obstacles tested speed, strength, balance and reaction. Getting wet, falling into foam pits, jumping through mystery doors, dodging swinging axes and clambering through tunnels was part of the excitement.

Obstacle designers seeing their creations come to life in the Grand Final included Canadian Red Bull snowboarding legend Seb Toots (Sébastien Toutant), Obstacle Course Racing champion and HYROX competitor Ida Mathilde Steensgaard of Denmark, professional esports great Arslan ‘ASH’ Siddique of Pakistan, content creator David Jones of New Zealand, Spanish social media star Nil Ojeda, content creators Paul Frege of Germany and Adrian ‘Aditotoro’ Vogt of Switzerland, adventure sports and fitness creator Demi Bagby of the USA, and French content creators Charles Poujade and Mélanie Buffetaud.

The race was contentious, with teams balancing on their tiptoes at times to avoid falling and receiving time penalties. But in the end Daniel Ekström and Linnea Stenson delivered the best time to be crowned king and queen of the castle at Red Bull Ibiza Royale.

“It’s amazing! We applied, but we never thought we would make it to Ibiza, and now we’re standing here with the trophy,” said Ekström.

Stenson added, “Both of us do obstacle course racing at home in Sweden, so we have trained quite a lot, but not as a team. This whole experience has been so insane – so much fun!”
